Created in 1986, the Brazilian Organ Transplant Association (ABTO) is a civil, non-profit medical society, whose main objective is to stimulate the development of all activities related to organ transplantation in Brazil, contributing to the establishment of norms, as well as the creation and improvement of legislation related to the subject.
The first years were not easy, especially from the financial point of view, when the ABTO board had to bear several expenses through private resources. In addition, there were times when the number of organ donors was non-existent and it was necessary to act in the media to broadly raise awareness of the issue.
So much work paid off and, starting in 1995, ABTO began to gain importance and finally projected itself on the national scene, where it actively works to congregate professionals and entities to the cause, stimulating research, knowledge dissemination, the creation of donation centers, organ banks, and recipient identification services, among many other actions to disseminate the importance of organ transplantation in the country.
